The Calibre Course: Build a Miyota 82S0 Movement, Step by Step

The Calibre course is the guided part of the Calibre Learning Kit. It takes you through a genuine Miyota 82S0 automatic movement, from the first screw to a running movement, in short video lessons filmed close up at the bench. No prior experience is needed. You follow at your own pace and can return to any lesson whenever you like.

How the course is built

The movement is taken apart and rebuilt in 16 steps, and the course adds those steps gradually. Each chapter goes a little deeper into the movement than the one before:

  • A disassembly video that takes the movement apart up to that stage, in the correct order.
  • An assembly video that rebuilds it in reverse, showing how each part is seated.
  • A short quiz on the details that matter most at that stage, so you know you are ready to go on.

By the time you reach the last chapter you have repeated the early steps several times, and the full movement no longer feels like a leap.

What the course covers

Introduction

A welcome, a walkthrough of the Bergeon tools in your kit, and the seven rules of the bench to read before you begin.

Steps 1–2: Rotor and balance

Remove and refit the automatic rotor and the balance assembly, and learn to work around the hairspring without touching it.

Steps 1–4: Pallet fork and going train

The pallet bridge and the train bridge, and how to line up the wheels of the going train so the bridge settles correctly.

Steps 1–8: Automatic winding, barrel and hacking

The automatic winding gears, the mainspring barrel and the hacking mechanism that stops the seconds hand when you set the time.

Steps 1–12: Click spring and setting wheels

The click spring, the hour wheel bridge, and the intermediate and setting wheels.

Steps 1–16: The complete movement

The keyless works and the bare main plate. Then the whole Miyota 82S0, taken apart and rebuilt in one sequence.

What you will learn

  • How the main systems of an automatic movement work together: energy, transmission, escapement, regulation, automatic winding and setting.
  • How to handle a movement safely with a movement holder, tweezers and screwdrivers.
  • How to disassemble a Miyota 82S0 in the correct order, and why the order matters.
  • How to reassemble it and seat every wheel, bridge and spring correctly.
  • How to check your work and bring the movement back to life.

Who it is for

The course is made for complete beginners: watch enthusiasts who want to understand what happens inside the watch on their wrist, and anyone curious about mechanical craft. All you need is the kit, or your own Miyota 82S0 and basic watchmaking tools, plus a clean, well-lit table and some patience.

Made by watchmakers

Calibre Project was started by Petter Trobe, whose grandfather Egil Walter Trobe and father Kåre Arthur Trobe both worked as watchmakers. The lessons are developed together with Swiss-trained watchmakers, so the technique you learn at home is the same technique used at the bench. Read our story.
